Who Else Wants to Learn the Truth about Wholesale DVD Prices?

By Strand Davis

One of the first things to understand about wholesale DVDs is that genuine, non-counterfeit, Wholesale DVDs are not cheap. By cheap, I mean literally for a few bucks. When I first started out, I truly believed that I could buy current release, wholesale DVDs of box office hits for between $2 to $5. Nothing could be further from the truth. I know that as a buyer you see prices this low on eBay and with Amazon merchant sellers. Even though they may be selling at that price, I guarantee you that a legitimate wholesale DVD of a box office hit, such as "Batman Begins," or "Inception" will not sell for $2 a pop. The real wholesale price will be closer to $19 if you purchasing from a studio authorized wholesaler.

You may be asking yourself, "How are the prices so low on eBay?" and "Where do you get legitimate low cost and wholesale DVDs?" The answers to these questions are not always obvious, and many people wanting to sell DVDs may experience real frustration trying to figure out just who the main distributors for DVD material are. Even though there is no real "secret" about it, the big name distributors tend to assume that you know, and have no real need to promote to small sellers.

How can you figure out true wholesale prices? If you do not yet hold an account with one of the big three wholesale DVD and video game wholesale distributors, you can get an idea of wholesale cost by checking new release DVD prices with Walmart. Walmart frequently sells new to DVD releases at cost or below as a loss leader to get you in the store and buying the other items they make a profit on. I know this may be hard to believe, and yes, the truth is shocking.

The second thing you must know about wholesale DVDs is that this is a very competitive eBay market. It is important to understand that if you start out trying to sell new release box office DVDs on eBay, you will probably not make a penny. Not unless you have thought through how to circumvent the power seller competition selling DVDs at a loss just because they can afford to do it. It is vital to be aware that on eBay, most of the prices are already at or well below wholesale price. Keep that in mind if you plan on buying DVDs from genuine wholesale DVD distributors and reselling on eBay.

The third thing you must know is how to make a profit on DVDs as quickly as possible. As suggested above, new release DVDs are probably the worst way to start. You are going to have the most success by selling later release DVDs and DVDs that deal with niche markets, such exercise, diet, and sex (not porn or adult, but sex advice and instruction--think Dr. Ruth).

In these few paragraphs I've really laid out some very important basic information that you need to consider before you start selling mass market DVDs. Remember, legitimate wholesale DVDs of major new releases do not sell for $2, so do not be fooled by hype that promises otherwise. I'd like to leave you with one final parting idea: Consider starting a niche video sharing site in which upload of the video gives you the right to use the material in any way you see fit. Then, after you have gathered sufficient material, release it in successive DVD volumes.
